Straw Markets can be found on many islands in The Bahamas. Here,
you’ll find an array of handmade mats, hats and baskets along
with fabrics, jewellery, woodcarvings, and guava jellies. Of course,
half the fun o
f shopping a straw market is meeting local merchants
and bargaining for their handmade products.
Duty-free shopping
Although
some are subject to a stamp duty, the following items are 100%
customs duty free:
certain building materials such as portland cement, pressure-treated
lumber, and asphalt shingles; china; crystal; fine jewellery;
leather bags; linens and tablecloths; wine and liquor; perfume,
cologne and toilet water; cameras
and accessories; cashmere sweaters; and watches.
Unlike
most duty-free ports, The Bahamas does not require proof of foreign
residency. Purchases may be carried
from the shop or shipped rather than being collected at departure.
